The Bachman book that Stephen King has done everything in his power to keep out of print for the last 20 years aside from having it banned.
This is the Library of Congress cassette rip that’s been floating around on the web for years and sometimes sounds like the nameless narrator is underwater. HOWEVER, I converted the MP3’s to WAV and did some vocals enhancing, some mild enhancing and some subtle clarity to try and get the majority of the recording to sound at least somewhat more audible.

For the benefit of anyone that maintains bibliographical material with their audio files, here’s information on this Library of Congress (LOC) release from the National Library Service (NLS) catalog for cassette books produced by NLS during 1987.
===================================
Author: Library of Congress.
Publisher: Washington : National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress (LOC)
Bachman Books: Four Early Novels
RC 22981 (1987)
by Stephen King
narrated by Bob Askey
6 cassettes
RAGE, written while the author was in high school and college, features teenagers wrestling to the point of violence with angst and frustration.
===================================
(Released as part of Bachman Books: Four Early Novels, but not included in these circulating files were readings of the other three Bachmann titles.)
. . . Also featuring teens, THE LONG WALK portrays a cruel future America.
. . . One man stands against the encroaching highway in ROADWORK,
. . . and contestants on a TV game show are depicted in the squalid future of THE RUNNING MAN.
Strong language and explicit descriptions of sex.

Really interesting book and I totally get why King has taken it out of circulation. And in his novel of The Running Man, the triumphant climax is the hero deliberately crashing a plane into a skyscraper. Stuff in those Bachman novels was horrifyingly prophetic in ways we couldn’t imagine.

Can anybody confirm this is the King book and not the Bob Woodward?

This is the King book … I’ve both read the actual book several times and listened to the entire book.

I understand why this book is out of print, but I think it was a good thing for me to read in my own late teens. The protagonist could easily be misinterpreted as heroic instead of deeply tragic. But as a normally screwed up teenager, it was good for me to read about other teenagers with similarly screwed up families, minds, and social lives. It’s not just Charlie’s story that is tragic, but it is revealed that pretty much everyone in the class has some awful stuff hidden in their closet. That’s unfortunately a pretty normal part of life. It’s not just you. That’s a good lesson. The book also is full of a remarkable amount of understanding and compassion. It’s unfortunate that most of our society doesn’t know how to properly digest a story like this one.

KING is KING and always will be. He knows where your mind goes. Does that scare you?
